Siena

In 1995 the historic center of Siena has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Siena is a beautiful city located in central Tuscany, set between the hills of Chianti and the seaside Maremma. It is rich with history, art and culture. Siena lies on a hill top, 320 meters about sea level, in the heart of Tuscany. It has maintained its medieval characteristics and charm, with narrow lanes and noble buildings, and rich with history. Siena is one of the most artistic cities of Italy, with important and famous monuments, buildings and squares. One of these squares is the Piazza del Campo, one of the most fascinating medieval squares in Italy. Siena collects and is home to many works of art by great masters Duccio di Buoninsegna, Donatello, Sodoma, Peruzzi, Beccafumi, Pinturicchio, Zuccari, Moroni, Jacopo della Quercia, Pisano, Lorenzetti, Simone Martini.  Throughout time they have created  many works of art, and are still present today, in the Duomo, in the Ospedale della Scala (Scala Hospital), Palazzo Pubblico (Public Palace) and in many churches.

Siena is the city of the Palio. The city is divided into contradas (neighborhoods).  Their inhabitants compete in the Piazza del Campo on the July 2nd and the August 16th in the extraordinary and exciting Palio horserace. Even among the thousands of yearly tourists, the race arouses a strong sense of competitive emotion. Siena is also home to one of Italy's well-known Universities.


The territory of Siena is famous throughout the world for its prestigious wines that are carefully and skillfully produced by local wineries. Even though the wineries have often been passed down from one generation to the next, they have renovated themselves by utilizing advanced and refined wine making technologies. This splendid area offers you Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Nobile di Montepulciano and many others. Many wineries and enotecas throughout the territory offer wine tastings and guided cellar tours. There aren't many large industrial firms, but there is a large artesian sectors in food items, sweets, ceramics and crystal.
